the 496 challenge

by Sean Conway

Open Catagory

The 496 Challenge is built around running, but endurance comes in many forms. In the Open Category you choose your sport. Ride it, row it, hike it, or combine disciplines to reach the full 496 km. However you get there, the mission is the same.

WHAT IS THE 496 CHALLENGE
open
category

The 496 Challenge is simple.
You cover the number of kilometres that matches the day of the month, choosing the sport that works for you.

Day 1 - 1 km
Day 2 - 2 km
Day 3 - 3 km
And so on.

You might, cycle, row, hike, or mix different sports along the way.

On a 31 day month, your final session will be 31 km. When you add it all together, you will have completed 496 kilometres in just one month.

It is progressive.
It is structured.
It builds daily discipline.

By the end of the month, you are not just fitter. You are tougher and more consistent.

WHY JOIN

The 496 Challenge is completely free to do on your own. You can simply follow the structure and complete the distances each day. However, people who join the 496 community have a significantly higher success rate because they gain structure, accountability and support throughout the month.

By joining the community you get:

  • Daily advice and guidance from Sean Conway

  • Motivational emails throughout your challenge

  • Access to the Strava and Facebook groups for accountability and support

  • A downloadable finisher certificate when you complete the challenge

  • Priority access to the official 496 finisher’s medal

  • A community of people all taking on the same challenge at the same time

Doing the miles is the easy part. Staying consistent for 31 days is where the community makes the difference.

Choose your format

The 496 Challenge can be completed in 4 different ways. The distance rule stays the same. Only the structure changes. Decide how you want to attack the month, then stick to it.

The Classic

The Classic follows the calendar exactly. Day 1 - 1 km. Day 2 - 2 km. Day 3 - 3 km. You continue building one kilometre at a time until finishing with 31 km on the final day of a 31 day month. Progressive, simple and relentless. This is the purest form of the 496 Challenge.

The Tombola

Write the numbers 1 to 31 on separate pieces of paper and place them in a hat. Each night, draw the next day’s distance at random. Whatever number you pull is what you run. No rearranging. No negotiating. Unpredictable and mentally demanding, this version removes comfort and forces commitment.

Rowing Team Race

The Planned Tombola

Randomise all 31 distances before the month begins and place them into your calendar in a way that fits your schedule. Longer distances can be reserved for weekends, shorter runs for busy weekdays. The total still reaches 496 km, but the load is structured around real life.

The Pyramid

Build up through the odd numbers first - 1, 3, 5, 7 and so on until you reach 31. Then work back down using the even numbers - 30, 28, 26 and continue descending. The total remains 496 km, but the distribution creates a wave of intensity rather than a straight line.
